In this project, we collaborated with a customer in the biomass industry to set up a filter to handle wood powder in the milling process.
The challenge
The mill that turns the biomass into powder runs 24/7, so the customer needed a filter that could run steadily without experiencing downtime for service. Due to the high volume of powder (500g/m³), we also had to ensure the solution included a large capacity filter.
As wood dust is an organic, carbonaceous material and potentially explosive, we needed to take the ATEX Directive into account. This directive covers equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
The solution
We selected a filter with construction form 12, with high air volume and high capacity in dust load (up to 1,000g/m³). In addition, the filter is equipped with an explosion panel and monitors that can alert users to the filter’s status.
The value
The air-to-cloth ratio is sufficiently low to allow the unit to deal with a large dust load, resulting in lower energy costs and extended lifetime of filter bags. The explosion panel and instruments meet regulatory compliance, and ensure protection against explosion.
